ABOUT

Scholarly expertise in the service of research

Expressum grew out of experience spanning academic research, scholarly publishing and research communication. This combined perspective makes it possible to support researchers, institutions and projects by understanding not only their texts, but also their methods, constraints and audiences.

BEHIND EXPRESSUM

Alexandre G. Mitchell

Archaeologist · Historian · Academic Author · Founder of Expressum

Alexandre G. Mitchell holds a D.Phil from the University of Oxford and is an archaeologist, historian and academic author. For more than twenty years, his work has been situated at the intersection of research, publishing and scholarly communication.

Educated in equal measure in France and England, he is bilingual in French and English and publishes in both languages. This dual academic culture gives him first-hand knowledge of the scholarly, editorial and stylistic conventions of both traditions.

Translation, editing, European research consultancy and the development of a digital presence are therefore not approached as separate services, but as different aspects of the same task: understanding a research project and helping it find the most precise and effective form for its audiences.

Expert · Rapporteur · Vice-Chair since 2011

This experience is entirely separate from Expressum’s consultancy work. It provides a deep understanding of how a research project must articulate scientific ambition, structure, clarity and feasibility, while fully respecting the distinct responsibilities and obligations attached to each role.

WORKING LANGUAGES

Expressum provides translation exclusively between French and English, in both directions: French → English and English → French.

HOW WE WORK

Precision · Dialogue · Continuity

Each project is approached in relation to its scholarly content, its audience and its editorial or institutional constraints. The work is based on regular dialogue, close attention to terminology and, where a collaboration develops over time, an increasingly detailed understanding of the project and its needs.
